Liveblogging Skybus: Can In-Flight Shopping Work?

May 24, 2007 at 3:54 PM | 3 Comments

Ok, the Skybus flight review is live via tape delay today.

Skybus raised $160 million dollars before they went wheels up on May 22nd--more than any other start up--ever. While we all know ten dollar flights are the hook, it is the in-flight sales that both employees and investors are counting on to help buoy the bottom line.

Will it work?

SKYBUS MENU PHOTO AND SHOPPING DETAILS

· $10.00, it is not just the highly advertised price of some Skybus airfare, it is also the average cost to get something to eat and drink on the plane. The upshot? The continental breakfast was actually really good.

· You can pay with cash, credit, or debit cards, and yes, they take AMEX.

· Passengers were buying a ton of food and drinks. Maybe it was first day syndrome, but if form holds Skybus will sell plenty of food and drinks.

· The trinket sales are kind of lame. It reminded us of that girl wearing a neon necklace, who approaches you in the dark at a concert to sell you a candy bar--except sometimes she is not annoying. The only time the trinket cart guy is not annoying? If you have kids and need to buy them some sort of distracting game or coloring book.

    Meat Loaf Plate?

Amazingly, I'd rather have a Mile High Mojito...

    One other important note

They quickly ran out of food choices. So you had to sit in the front four rows to get a shot at the Continental breakfast. If you were in row five you were out of luck. I suspect the back of the bus was only offered $10 meatloaf.

    I like the food selections

    I'd buy a $10 chicken caesar box.
