This morning the Skybus welcoming crew at Pease, complete with balloons, and plenty of mainstream media folks, couldn't have been more optimistic.
If Skybus becomes a viable alternative to Manchester and Boston, Portsmouth's antiquated airport may just be revived, but all that is a long way off. For now, Pease can boast free parking and the semi-convenience of being right of 95 and cross their fingers.
However, far more important is who was flying Skybus from Portsmouth to Columbus. The crowd was decidedly Greyhound--the bus company. Plenty of college kids who normally may have boarded a 16-hour bus to Ohio were stoked to get a $10 fare back home. A smattering of families, who might be hard pressed to shell out over $200 for each of their young children to travel to visit family, gladly paid $10 for the opportunity to do so.
Will it last? This isn't Europe. Is there enough of a Portsmouth to Columbus demand to keep these planes in the air? Could Fung Wah Bus in the air actually work? Time will tell.
