Skybus Offers Tempting Ten Dollar Fares, But The Headaches Might Be Priceless

April 25, 2007 at 11:10 AM | 0 Comments

You know the Thanksgiving day dinner scene where your annoying family inevitably starts talking about real estate? Eventually, you get to the climax of the conversation, which goes something like this:

Annoying Uncle: How much do you pay a month in rent?
You: Too much.
Annoying Uncle: How big is your place?
You: Too small.
Annoying Uncle: Do you realize if you moved to Columbus Ohio you could get a 3,000 square foot house for absolutely nothing?
You: Yes, but then I would have to live in Columbus Ohio.

--Uncomfortable Conversation Ends--

The Skybus approach is explained here.

SkyBus is taking that same approach to airfares. You can fly from Columbus Ohio to Burbank for an unheard of $10, one way. However, you have to get yourself to Columbus Ohio.

Furthermore, Skybus's website lists flights out of urban areas like Boston and Seattle, but these airports are really in places like Portsmouth NH and Bellingham WA--far from their listed urban center. In Portsmouth, which is over an hour from Boston, Skybus is flying out of Pease, which lists Pan Am as one of their "operating airlines"--yeah.

While some of the Skybus ports--Ft. Lauderdale, Oakland, and Burbank--are not only acceptable, but also preferred, it will be interesting to see if this airline will offer convenience and deep discounts, or headaches and inconvenience, for point to point flyers in the U.S.

One more thing, some of the SkyBus "rules of flying" are kind of out there:

·No real in-flight entertainment--Skybus Suggests you bring a book.
·The first two bags are 5 bucks apiece. After that, it's $50 a bag.
·No phone number, just a website.

So we drive all the to Portsmouth, you tell us our flight is delayed, or worse cancelled, and we have to find WiFi at the archaic Pease airport in order to rebook?  Better hope PortsmouthWiFi has a hot spot out there.
