Airline Storm Report: JFK Flight Delay Spotlight on JetBlue and Delta

April 16, 2007 at 12:42 PM | by markj | 0 Comments

It is really hard to compare airline performance in a Nor'easter like we are currently on the back end of here on the easter seaboard. However, one way to try to compare apples to apples is to check FlightStats for overall airport delays, then check airline website for individual flight information. Finally, customer service in stormy times can separate airline heroics, and what could become legendary airline gaffs.

Here is you noontime report on how JetBlue and Delta appear to be weathering the storm on outbound JFK flights.

JetBlue

NYC to BOS
First six flights:
First two cancelled. 9:45 departed (@ 11:26).  Next two flights delayed.

NYC to BUR
All four flights on time. First two departed on time.

Customer Service
Less than six minute wait on the phone (yes they are answering), even played some decent classic rock while we were on hold. Answered all questions once they were on the line. Helpful, friendly operator told us flight will be delayed throughout the day because of earlier weather issues--best to check website for specifics, but things seem to be getting better at JFK.

Delta

NYC to BOS
First six flights:
First two cancelled. 10:00 AM still awaiting takeoff. 11:00 AM boarding now. 2:00 PM cancelled.

NYC to BUR
7:00 AM left at 6:58 (through Salt Lake). 6:00 AM through Cincinnati--cancelled.

Customer Service
Annoying credit card style automated voice. Got to domestic phone area and had to endure Delta web site upsell messages. Smooth soft rock in the background--it might be Babyface.
On hold: The 7 minute mark
More upsells, followed by more soft rock--this time it is Sixpence None The Richer, without a doubt.
On hold: The 11 minute mark
Static. Really bad static, with similar soft rock in the background--Who Says You Can't Go Home? Fairly sure this one is Bon Jovi and it is openly taunting us.
On hold: The 15 minute mark
More static, with more soft rock in the background--"age 14 we got you down on your knees?" What is New Radicals. We'll take nineties soft rock for $500.
On hold: The 20 minute mark
Static seems to be clearing up. More soft rock, but now it is in Spanish. No idea who it is, but it is not Enrique Iglesias, sounds like a Spanish George Michael. Hanging up now, you get the point.
