If you're a nostalgia-hound, wishing you'd conquered NYC in the days of 9-5 office hours and luncheonettes, be sure to stop by Bamn! Automat next time you're in the East Village.
Modeled after an old-school actual automat, it's filled with tiny plastic slots, where you drop your quarters in, and out comes the food of your choice--no dealing with a hostess or waiter required. Decor leans towards antiseptic clear lucite, hot pink signage, and metal bins, but you're not there to sit and linger anyway. Menu options include predictable comfort food favorites such as grilled cheese, hot dogs, pork buns, and mac & cheese, all made fresh throughout the day.
Touting their tagline, "Satisfaction is Automatic!", Bamn's fare leaves a bit to be desired (how fresh can a sitting grilled cheese really be?), but the trip's worth it to take a small step back in time for some cheap and fast grub, and to pretend you actually have an entire lunch hour to spend grabbing snacks and shopping.
