Though you wouldn't know it with all the snow and ice in the Northeastern US, this week marks the beginning of spring. Spring break, beach season and the imminent start of summer are just around the corner. If April is the new June, we better get you prepped early, so this week we'll be looking at the sandy strands that while beautiful, should come with a warning label. Brazil seems to have it all when it comes to beaches. Girls from Impanema, havaianas, caipirinhas--the whole coastline is designed for sandy relaxation. Throw in some futbolito, and you could have a killer day at the beach. Unless of course, that beach is Recife.

When your beach shows up on Discovery Channel's Shark Week, you know you're going to need some damage control PR. But all the spin in the world won't make up for the fact that since the `90s, Recife has become one of the world's most dangerous beaches. A combo of a shipping port and a (now shuttered) slaughterhouse inland and upriver created ideal conditions for bull sharks, which are now ensconced. Ideas for keeping sharks out are few and far between. Might we suggest staying in the shallows?

How to get there:
Guararapes International Airport is the local landing strip. Varig, TAP and Gol all serve Recife, though if you want a chance to see the beach, maybe flying in Brazil isn't the best idea.
