Airbus A380 Flight To Nowhere Continues: On to Chicago!

March 20, 2007 at 10:03 AM | by | Comments (3)

We mapped the best spot to view the Airbus A380 today in Chicago here.

If you are in the Mannheim Road area in Chicago at approximately 12:50 PM, look up in the sky and shoot some video, will ya?

Perhaps the best chance to see the A380 on Tuesday will be when it crosses the Lake Michigan shoreline somewhere between Evanston and Waukegan, according to air-traffic controllers responsible for guiding the plane to O'Hare. The plane will cross the shoreline at an altitude between 7,000 and 11,000 feet.

Unlike Los Angeles, which set up public viewing areas, Chicago officials are warning that police will ticket drivers who attempt to park on roads near O'Hare when the eight-story A380 touches down, scheduled for 12:50 p.m., on a flight from Kennedy.

Police ticketing airline gawkers, no public tours of the plane--it is like Lufthansa and Qantas are doing everything in their power to stop the snowball of big plane buzz.

Lufthansa plans to start flying between Chicago and Frankfurt in 2009, pending completion of improvements at O'Hare to accommodate the big bird.

In Chicago? Going to see the giant plane land? Send us photos and, or, video.

Anyone else with me on this?

While I find the whole thing fascinating, there's no way I'm flying on one of these for a couple of years. Shouldn't a pilot have, I don't know, 5 years or so of experience flying such a huge aircraft before hurling it--and a full load of passengers--across the Pacific? I'm scared.

Sounds like...

you are about to use the H word.

I hear you though.  850 people on board.  Longer runways needed to land it---has to be a ton of extra training involved for A3800 pilots, right?

don't forget

most carriers including LH will have the plane configured to hold only 550 passengers total.

also, fear of the unknown is understood, but disaster can strike at any time, and i would rather have an LH crew on board than any other based on their obsession with safety...

the A380 has got the office quite literally buzzing, especially after the flyby and wing tip yesterday on the way to JFK.  i get to see inside of the plane tomorrow, and it's going to be over manhattan with 200 people on board tomorrow morning 09:00-10:30.
