Airline Report: ExpressJet to Ontario Airport

ExpressJet, the operator of Continental's Express service, announced in late January that it would spin off its own independent airline with regional jets no longer in use by Continental. ExpressJet Airlines will start service in April, under its own brand, to 24 cities in the U.S.
Los Angeles-area travelers could benefit from ExpressJet's expansion at LA/Ontario Airport, which is about 55 miles from LAX. Routes from ONT will include Austin, Spokane, Albuquerque and Kansas City. ExpressJet will face competition, albeit most of it not non-stop, from Southwest on these routes.
Elsewhere in LAX-land, United is hoping to take up service at dormant Palmdale Airport. If negotiations are successful, United would offer two flights a day from Palmdale (about 65 miles from LAX) to San Francisco--but United's flights along this corridor are notoriously unreliable.
Southern California residents who don't live close to Los Angeles International Airport could benefit. There might not be a monumental change at LAX itself as a result, but every little baby step counts.
