Is New Zealand Really Pure?

February 19, 2007 at 12:03 PM | 1 Comment

The Land of the Long White Cloud's latest tourism campaign, 100% Pure New Zealand, has had to admit it is not exactly pure. Because while New Zealand might be a wonderful place to visit, nature doesn't make things exactly the way the graphic designers would like--even in New Zealand--so a little digital touching up has been necessary.

According to a TVNZ report, photographs used in the 100% Pure campaign are sadly not 100% pure. For example, an idyllic picture of kayakers paddling next to some dolphins is in fact just two photos superimposed. The official word is that it's not "misleading", but instead is "representational":

This is something that happens every day in our country, and therefore it's a 100% pure New Zealand experience.

We would kind of like to poll Kiwi kayakers and see just how often a family of dolphins joins them, but that aside, we're more worried about what else isn't true. For example, are all the people in New Zealand just superimposed photographs--and the country really has been totally taken over by sheep?

    Dolphins and Kayaks

A number of times during our annual summer hols at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel Peninsular we are visited by a pod of dolphins that chase fish to within 200m of the shoreline. On those occasions just about every kayak on the beach gets launched.  God knows why Tourism New Zealand would bother faking a photo. Next summer I'll grab some shots and send them to TNZ.
