Malaysia Next In Line For Better Bathrooms

In our continuing in-depth coverage of Asia's bathrooms, today we turn to the issue of public toilets in Malaysia. As the Malaysian Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government says:

Clean toilets cannot merely be judged by the eyes. This matter also involves the use of cleaning equipment, soap, fragrances and proper tissues.

It seems that public toilets in Malaysia have been a little sub-standard for a long time, and tourists (and others) often complain about this little problem. So the Malaysian government is planning to have colleges offer courses on how to keep public restrooms clean. Other measures planned include installing those hi-tech (and scary) self-cleaning toilets in Kuala Lumpur, and taking restaurant licenses away from restaurants whose toilets don't measure up.

Whether or not they'll take the challenge from Beijing to come up with a 5-star toilet remains to be seen.
