"Gossip Girl" Recap: Lonelyboy Versus the Blueblood

December 6, 2007 at 3:30 PM | by egw | 4 Comments

Visit our Gossip Girl Map to check out the sites featured on last night's episode, "Hi, Society."

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Serena who didn't want to go to the ball. When her evil fairy grandmother came into town and said she might be dying (even though she totally wasn't), Serena agreed to go. But Evil Fairy Grandma wasn't satisfied until she had told off Brooklyn peasant boyfriend Dan and tried to buy off Dan's father Rufus to keep his son from her granddaughter.

Serena secretly wants to take off a year after high school and teach in Southeast Asia; in Grandma's version, she has two kids and volunteers with the Nature Conservancy. (As Blair says, "Oh, stop it, you sound like me!") Serena ends up being forced to attend the ball with a newly reformed Carter Baizen, with whom Serena was once involved and was last seen scamming Nate in an illegal poker game.

Nate won't let that slide, especially when Chuck puts it in his head that Carter is Blair's new lover. Of course, Chuck is really her lover, but not for long; Blair ditches her debutante-ball date, Prince Theodore (!), to go with Nate "as friends," and then makes out with him after he decks Carter.

Meanwhile, Alison Humphrey has a gallery opening and Jenny skips it to go to the ball, like we all knew she would.

Boy, we thought Lily van der Woodson was evil until we met her mother, which is why Evil Fairy Grandma CeCe is our Prep of the Ep this week. Not only did she almost jeopardize our perfect young couple, she forced the young, wild Lily to choose between Rufus and her inheritance. With a matriarch like this, who needs moms?

    GG frustrations

I love GG but every new episode I am starting to get annoyed. First off, these are pretty rote storylines. I compare this to Julie Cooper getting all involved in Ryan and Marissa's romance. Or Caleb Nichol telling Kirsten that Ryan doesn't belong in their house. Basically, its the same old rich patriarch-matriarch trying to push out the poor but hot boy.

also, i know this was based off a young adult book series but these names are so awful. nate archibald. blair waldorf. serena van der woodsen, chuck bass. rufus humphrey. blech. at least have some ugly people playing these ugly-named characters.

third, what happend to the asian and black girl who were blair's sidekicks? or vanessa? dan's childhood crush. its like this show fulfilled a minority quota by using them in the first few episodes then ditched them. again, blech.

lastly, dan's parents look way too young and dan looks way to old for there to be a believable mother, father-son relationship. i mean if i were the actress playing dan's mom, i would have a hard time NOT giving him a hug that lasted just a little too long. if you know what i mean. hehe.

anyways, i still like this show but its definitely only worth watching on thursday afternoons on my Tivo

They come out at the ball!

Where we learn that Kati wants to major in Neuroscience and support the New York Public Library. Because she's Asian, and therefore a huge nerd.

According to Gawker, those characters were supposed to be Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type commentators, but casting agents gave up on that and just cast two hot un-funny models. It's a shame.

    Vanessa better be back

Not so much because I like her as a character as that she is from my home state, and so I'm probably about 3 degrees separated from her.

I completely hear you on all these points, although it forms a crucial part in my Wednesday-night guilty-pleasure block (flanked by Top Model and Project Runway).
