Frank Lloyd Wright's Midwest version of Taliesin, perhaps hampered by a colder climate, receives somewhat less attention than its west coast companion. Located near Spring Green, Taliesin Wisconsin served as the springboard for much of Wright's later designs--and it was where many of Wright's tumultuous personal problems unfurled.
In addition to Taliesin, Wisconsin also boasts other Wright-designed homes. The Bernard Schwartz House and Usonia I (the Jacobs House) are both open for overnight stays. And because tours for Taliesin Wisconsin don't begin again until May, Wright fanatics in Wisconsin don't have much of a choice: It's overnight stay or bust.
Our Guide to Schwartz House and Usonia I
The more famous of the two Wisconsin residences, Usonia I was conceived and built during Wright's career rejuvenation during the Depression. Located just one mile south of his noted Unitarian Meeting House, Usonia I was part of the architect's dream for a new community, city and national environment. (He went so far as to suggest the U.S. be renamed "The United States of Usonia"). Usonia I was followed by 140 other houses Wright designed with the "Usonia" title and is now available for monthly stays.
Starting at $1,500 a month, up to two adults and one child can live in the home somewhat undisturbed. (Due to its popularity among Wright fans, the house remains open for visits on a by-request basis). According to its official site, Usonia I is also up for sale--have a few million sitting around? 441 Toepfer Ave., Madison, WI
For overnight stays, the Bernard Schwartz House starts at $295 a night. Designed for a "median-income family," though its size and design points to a well-to-do lifestyle, the home was commissioned in 1938 by Life magazine and auctioned off to Wisconsin businessman Bernard Schwartz. No public tours are available, so a visitor's best bet is spending the night. 3425 Adams St., Two Rivers, WI
