Belgium Travel: Still a Country!

December 20, 2007 at 10:00 AM | by | Comments (2)

Belgium is no longer for sale, and with its newly formed interim government, it'll be a unified country until at least March. That'll give politicians three more months to hammer out permanent agreements on constitutional reforms and economic policies.

After a six-month negotiating period, you'd think citizens would be relieved, but most of them haven't been too bothered by the lack of central government. While the suits argue over autonomy for French-speaking Wallonia and Dutch-speaking Flanders, the people continue to assert their cultural identities--as they have for centuries.

Not much will change for travelers to Belgium; you'll still need two languages to navigate the country. But now that a settlement's come through, you'll have something to discuss with the locals while guzzling another beer.

Staying in Belgium

Belgium has a lot more to offer than just beer, fries and chocolate alone. Four years ago I spend almost an entire season is Belgium's beautiful cities: Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Most hotels in Belgium are really attractive and will appeal to almost everyone, whether you are a business traveller or want to go on a business holiday. I stayed a wonderful three weeks in a hotel Antwerpen, capital of Fashion, followed by almost a month an a half in a Brussel hotel, to end my journey through Belgium in a Ghent hoteland a Bruges hotel.

Bruges, Belgium

If you would ever go to Belgium, you should definitely visit Bruges, one of the most beautiful cities in the world in my opinion. The entire city centre has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is really wonderful, charming, romantic, etc.. A weekend or more in a hotel in Brugge, I would recomment this to everyone!
