First Person Flight Reviews: Alaska Airlines

Maybe Alaska Airlines should take cues from the Bible verses it prints on every in-flight meal tray. (Yep, travelers get to eat overcooked chicken with the New Testament). Despite its holy-roller reputation, the carrier has, according to passengers, forgotten the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

With tales of lost luggage, constant delays, poor customer service and stolen items, the company's netted a spot in Forbes' recently released lineup of America's worst airlines. The carrier mishandled 6.6 out of every 1,000 bags, and arrived on-time only 72.8 percent of the time, according to the Department of Transportation.

These passengers have had it

Consumer review site My3Cents.com user AlaskaHorizonSucks didn't appreciate Alaska's flight delays:

I started in Orange County, and our plane was delayed four hours. Finally get on the plane and make it to Seattle. Then in Seattle, Alaska made an error and I had to take another flight. The other flight was delayed another four hours, also the gate was changed 7 times (no joke). I was trying to get on other flights as standby but to no avail. The employees were very rude.

Another user of the site, Chris323 had a stolen luggage horror story:

After my flight from Seattle to Dallas, I discovered that my cell phone and digital camera were missing from my luggage once it arrived in Dallas. Spoke with Alaska Air baggage employee [who] told me he hadn't seen any paperwork on my loss and wasn't familiar with my claim. There is nothing showing a record of my [previously filed] claim.

And of course, there are few things less irritating than an overpriced piece of toast, as OneWhoFlewWithAlaskaAirlinesLastTime tells us:

Instead of the food, which was supposed to be included [in the ticket price] a piece of toast was offered for $5."

And lest you think we're just beating up on Alaska, there was one average experience, but every other review slammed the carrier.

Let us know what you think of Alaska Airlines these days.

Thoughts on ASA/QXE (none / 0)

It's been a while since I've flown mainline, but flew Horizon on the late Seattle-Portland shuttle last month. Flight left on time, got in on time, and you really can't discount the value of free beer. With refills usually, though not on that flight. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of horrid QX experiences in the last six years, including canceled flights, luggage that didn't make connections, rebookings offered for an airport 100 miles away from my destination (Lewiston instead of Walla Walla), refusal to pay for a rental car when rebooked flight was 4 days later... I'd say things started to turn around in 2006. My QX flight to SEA was canceled a couple hours in advance and they called me before I had even left for the airport to let me know and offer me options. They booked me on another flight out of a nearby airport and I was still able to make my connection to Chicago. Flew mainline a bunch last year and don't have any real complaints... they used to have free hot "meals" (breakfast bagel, e.g.) in coach, but dropped those sometime in 2006. Disappointing but not really a surprise. Full disclosure: I have a former flight instructor and a college buddy who are both currently pilots for QX.
