Starbucks Alternatives: NYC Has Choices

November 9, 2007 at 11:00 AM | by ced138 | 0 Comments

New York has one coffee shop for every 365 people. So if you're still downing Starbucks, it's only because you lack creativity. That's where we come in. Here are a few alternatives to the over-roasted bitterness of mass caffeination.

Gorilla Coffee roasts beans for eateries and groceries all over the city. But the freshest brews are found at their outpost on Fifth Ave. and Park Place. Drink an espresso inside or grab it to go and stroll down to the nearby Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. to pick up a new cape and utility belt.

Some shops focus so hard on the bean and forget to fill our stomachs. Not at 'sNice, which brews a solid cup of coffee alongside an assortment of $7 vegetarian sandwiches (we like the Smoked Tempeh Wrap). The café, on Eighth Avenue and 4th Street, has free WiFi and comfy seating, too.

The best coffee in Williamsburg is Gimme! Coffee, according to the hipster blog FreeWilliamsburg.com. Those hipsters know their Williamsburg--and their coffee. While the sparse, narrow room lacks appeal, the baristas focus on making a stellar cup of joe. In fact, they're concentrating so hard that they don't have time to smile. Ah Brooklyn.
