Best Raw Bars :: Grand Central Oyster Bar

Shucking season is here, and we're searching for the top raw bars. Our map has the exact locations of the best briny bivalves.

And you thought we weren't going to mention it. Come on. The historic Grand Central Oyster Bar is as much an homage to New York as it is an ode to oysters. Since 1913, harried commuters, big-money bankers and star-crossed lovers have bellied up to this long raw bar to share big platters of seafood while the trains rumble overhead.

OK, so, the Oyster Bar looks like it hasn't been refurbished since it first opened, but that gritty cafeteria feel is part of the charm. Besides, you're not there for sleek lines or cool furniture; you're there for the raw oysters and clams. You'll find both coasts well represented with ever-changing catches. The oyster stew is also an old-school classic.

The raw bar is also the only place we've heard of where you can suck down Blue Point oysters while drinking Blue Point lager. If you're not dedicated to the local food movement, you can try a Chimay with some West Coast oysters--you can't go wrong with Oregon Kumamotos. There's a full bar to keep you sated, but we love beer in this type of cozy atmosphere.

The last time we were in, one of the barkeeps called out the couple seated next to us. They had to sheepishly admit that their last half-shell was too much to finish--until he told them that the plate was staying until the last oyster was eaten. So be warned: These guys take their seafood seriously.

Getting There:
It's on the lower level of a train station, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting there. Don't forget to try the whispering gallery just outside--stand on either side of the big arch, and whisper to a friend across the way. You'll hear each other no matter how much bustle surrounds you.
