Skybus Going International

Skybus giveth the $10 fare, and she taketh away the $10 fare. After scrapping flights to some West Coast destinations, the airline will expand service to Greensboro, NC and Punta Gorda, FL. And, according to The Bahama Journal, Skybus will ink a deal for service to the Bahamas in the next 30 days. (The airline already got DOT approval for international flights.)

If the deal goes through, Skybus would start service to the islands in March 2008 from an as-yet-unannounced origin. Columbus is the obvious guess, but the airline is starting service to Florida in December out of Portsmouth, NH ("Boston"). With the sizable frozen New Englander market to tap, Skybus might announce a Boston-Bahamas route.

Wherever the origin ends up, Skybus won't stop with just one flight a day, says Deputy Director General of Tourism David Johnson:

They have the ability to offer two cities, but we will start at one base. Our plan is to add the second base by June, and a third base by the fall of next year. So within their first 18 months of operation, the potential is there to enable us to receive up to 160,000 seats and in the neighbourhood of 110,000 to 130,000 passengers.
