Pedal-Powered Candy Chasing: Halloween Bike Rides

October 18, 2007 at 10:34 AM | 0 Comments

Is this all some sort of E.T. homage? Whatever the reason, there seems to be an irresistible urge to combine Halloween with two-wheeled transportation. We've sworn off combining the two since catching our Dracula cape in the chain guard and doing a header into a tree in 4th grade. At least we didn't need any fake blood that year.

Regardless, this month is bursting with opportunities to break out that sweet Ghost Rider costume you've been planning. From New York and Boston to Pittsburgh and Albuquerque, we've got all the details on this year's candy rides.

Durham, NC, Oct 26th and 27th: 4th Annual Habitat of Durham Halloween 100 Bike Ride. A moonlit ride on Friday, followed by a race, family fun ride and costume contest on Saturday. Points for using the word "spooktacular".

Boston, MA, Oct 27: Bikes Not Bombs' Halloween Scavenger Hunt Bike Ride. Great excuse for tearing around Boston on two wheels. Food and prizes plus the safety in numbers necessary for braving contact with Boston drivers.

New York, NY, Oct 28th: 4th Annual Little Tykes Halloween Bike Race and Costume Parade. For the kids, ages 4-9. Prizes for speediest finish and coolest costume. How funny would a bookie be at this thing?

Pittsburgh, PA, Oct 28: Halloween Haunted Bike Ride. Venture Outdoors leads a trek past some of Pittsburgh's haunted buildings with stories and costumes.

Boston, MA, Oct 31: 2007 Halloween Bike Ride. A good chance to mingle with Boston's cycling scenesters. Costumes, supermodified cycles and lots of use of the term DIY, no doubt.

Albuquerque, NM, Oct 31: BikeABQ Halloween Ride. A free ride with an opt-out option for non-night owls. Costume prizes include one for the most recyclable/sustainable costume, so dress to impress from your neighbors' recycling bins.
