The Good News About London Heathrow

October 1, 2007 at 9:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

We don't usually bring you good news stories about London Heathrow. (Probably because our earliest memories of the airport are almost fainting in a long queue at passport control with the central heating up way too high.) Whether it's luggage handling problems or check-in stress, trips through Heathrow have a well-earned reputation for being really, really awful.

The good news is they're trying to fix that by building the large-capacity Terminal 5. Intended to serve 30 million passengers a year (nearly half of Heathrow's total), Terminal 5 should be up and running in about six months, and it's supposed to make being at the airport a pleasure.

There'll be a higher ratio of shops to passengers than elsewhere in London for easy retail therapy, and the design will be bright and modern. The developers even reckon travelers will want to come to the airport early just because the airport terminal is so damn nice. We'll believe that when we see it.
