Airline Report: JAL's New Premium Economy

Where: Japan
January 22, 2007 at 2:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

Japan Airlines just announced that it will introduce a new premium economy cabin for its Boeing 777s, on key international routes between Japan and the U.S. and Europe. If their forecast is to be trusted, the premium economy cabin should debut sometime between late 2007 and early 2008.

Premium economy seats will come in a 2x4x2 configuration, and feature amenities such as leg rests, large tray tables, and power ports at every seat. Pitch will be a comfortable 38", and there will be fixed personal space, a la Cathay Pacific's newest regular economy design. Fixed personal space means that your seat reclines within its own pod and not into your neighbor's knees. Quite a blessing.

Lounge access is being considered as an additional perk. No pricing schemes have yet been announced, but JAL's press release indicates that the seats will be available for direct booking by anyone. JAL's competitor ANA has a premium economy product available to frequent fliers and customers paying full fare for economy.
