· Southwest has dropped its plan to develop inflight gambling options as a way to boost revenue--an idea that easyJet and Ryanair are, by all reports, still pursuing with vigor.
· Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary might just be the Donald Trump of the airline industry. First, there was that hostile takeover attempt on Aer Lingus. Now, he's calling Austrian Airlines "idiotic" for offering free food.
· Vietnam's Pacific Airlines (not to be confused with Air Pacific of Fiji) will start operating as a budget airline. Tickets will cost as low as $1, which in the budget airline world means anywhere from $20 to $200 all-in for a round trip.
· Another airline, this time domestic, also claims it will be selling $1 tickets. SkyValue will celebrate the January 24 launch of its service between Gary, IN, and Mesa, AZ, with $1 o/w fares on that day only. We tried to price out the real cost of a round trip, but their website is acting, appropriately enough, rather budget-like.
