Movie Set Travel: All the King's Men

Head down south (figuratively) this week with the opening of All the King's Men, based on the 1940s novel by Robert Penn Warren, about the life of populist Willie Stark. Stark's character is based heavily on former LA governor Huey Long-a southern icon. Long created all sorts of interesting programs like his "Every Man a King" initiative, where he aimed to redistribute wealth.  He was assassinated at the height of his popularity at the state capitol; his rumored last words were, "God, don't let me die. I have so much to do." Nevertheless, perfect fodder for the big screen.

This one's got all the heavy hitters in one place: Sean Penn, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, James Gandolfini, and Kate Winslet. They better hope it does well so everyone can get paid.

As much of the film was shot in Louisiana, with parts specifically in Baton Rouge, we offer you some fun things to check out around town:

Where To Stay:
St Francisville Inn
About a half-hour north of Baton Rouge, you'll find this historic, traditional inn, built in the 1800s. Think 100-year old moss-draped oak trees, a wraparound porch, and just 10 guest rooms with an adjoining common courtyard. Rooms are a nicely priced $80-$100, and there's even free Wi-Fi thrown in too. No pets though, they don't want your dog laying all over their antique furniture.

What to See:
The Capitol Castle
The old LA state capitol, this entire building burned to the ground and was restored in 1882. Features include a multi-color stained glass ceiling. Long himself was an admirer of the castle and lobbied heavily for its reconstruction even after Mark Twain called it ugly. As mentioned, this was where he met his demise.

Where To Eat:
Juban's
You don't go to LA and avoid eating cajun. Head to Juban's, and get hosted by Miriam and Carol Juban.  Dig into the warm crawfish salad or the Louisiana crab cake with champagne beurre blanc sauce to taste some authentic flavor.
