Are you familiar with the whirling, growling, always-hungry catastrophe that is Looney Tunes' Tazmanian Devil? Well, make the fur rougher, the face uglier, the prey rottener, and the table manners the worst in history, and you've got the original Tasmanian devil, carnivorous marsupial living only in Tasmania, Australia's southern island state.

OK, at times they look a little bit cute--from a distance--but see them at feeding time and you'll never want to eat again. Added to their charm is that roadkill or anything else that's already dead is their meal of choice, lazy creatures that they are. If you're still interested, then a Tasmanian devil center, devils @ cradle, has just opened in Tasmania's Cradle Mountain National Park.

If you visit during the day, it's sometimes possible to touch one of these guys, although center employees insist they're shy and not usually so welcoming to prods and pokes from strangers. A highlight at the new center is the after-dark feeding. Make sure you eat your own dinner well before, then at 8.30pm you can watch (and hear) the Taz devils eat. We've experienced this before, and consider it a solid component of any weight-loss plan: You won't want to eat for a good few days after watching Tasmanian devils at the dinner table.
