Koalas--Cute When Small, Scary When Big

Where: Australia

Everyone who visits Australia wants to cuddle a koala. Soft sleepy things that they are, despite their sharp claws, they definitely rate high up there on the cute rankings.

Until you see the giant version. Remember Australia's obsession with big things? Two different towns have tried to gain fame with a Big Koala, but somehow the large scale versions have lost the cute factor. Our award for the ugliest Big Koala goes to Dadswells Bridge near the Grampians National Park in Victoria. This 46-foot high bronze construction even has a tourist shop inside.

The second-ugliest Big Koala is on Phillip Island, south of Melbourne. With its chin held up by a pole and a sign warning people not to climb on the koala, we're really not sure of its value as a tourist icon. Perhaps it forces travelers to hurry along the track and get into the tourist shop to spend dollars faster.
