HOWTO: Ship Luggage

That tears it--we're never checking a bag again. Between the 20,000 bags that are lost at Heathrow, tales of items stolen from luggage by rapacious TSA agents, and the all-around insanity of the airport experience these days, we're shipping our bags from here on in. We figure we'll make up the added cost by adding years to our life. Here's how to do it:

We'd recommend a company like Luggage Free. They offer door-to-door service, and can arrange for your bags to arrive before you do (so they'll be waiting for you); they'll even ship stuff like golf bags and skis. You probably want to hold off on shipping your cello, just `cause the insurance on the bags only goes to $1,000.

Their crack team of luggage agents will arrive, wrap the bag in about a billion layers of protective plastic, like the people you used to mock at the airport, and whisk the bags to the destination. The service is not overnight, so you'll have to plan ahead, and shipping internationally means filling out more paperwork. Nationally, shipping will cost you a $40 flat fee plus a per pound rate-- depending on how fast you want your bags to get there--between $1 and $2 a pound.

This won't prevent the TSA from gently cupping your breasts at the airport when you're set aside for additional screening, but at least this way, you can make sure that the bags arrive at your vacation unmolested.
