Fishtravaganza in Tokyo
Where: Japan
Looking for a ton or two of raw fish? Then you can't go past Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market. But take note that it's not a tourist attraction to visit after a long night out in Ginza. The big excitement of the raw tuna auction starts at the real rise-and-shine early hour of 5.30am; by 7.00am, everything's arranged at smaller stalls for restaurateurs, caterers and the odd tourist to buy.
Just the same, most travelers struggle in about 8.00am, but their eyes open wide fast when they see the masses of raw fish for sale. We know all that sushi's got to come from somewhere, but the sights--and perhaps more so the smells--are really overwhelming. Earlier this week, a major blackout hit Tokyo, and proprietors at Tsukiji were more than a little concerned that their fresh fish would become, well, stinky--especially considering temperatures over 90 were forecast. Luckily, the power came back on within an hour and, they say, all was well. But if you were eating genuine sushi in Tokyo earlier this week, let us know about any bellyaches or bathroom emergencies you might've had.
