Run, Manfred, Run!

Most of us travel by plane, train, bus or car, but the odd crazy few prefer to do it all on foot. Enter one of the craziest of the lot, Austrian ultra-marathon runner Manfred Michlits. His running career reads like a list of torturous punishments--with runs lasting days and stretching across multiple countries--but all that's not enough for this obsessed man from Vienna.

With the kind intention of raising money for children's charities (and perhaps to avoid having to get a real job), Manfred's planning a round-the-world run for 2007. Starting on 1 January, he plans to spend 365 days running across Asia, Australia and North America before heading home to Europe. Over 15,000 miles and who knows how many pairs of jogging shoes later, Manfred and his physiotherapist, car mechanic and cook team hope to be back in Vienna. Hasn't anyone told him that round-the-world air tickets are much more affordable these days?
