Australia's Big Ol' Cave
July 26, 2006 at 9:33 AM | 0 Comments
Big news in Australia this week when scientists discovered that the very old caves people like to visit in the Blue Mountains are, in fact, very, very, VERY old--so old that they now win the title of world's oldest open caves.
The Jenolan Caves just west of Sydney have had their birthday put back from just a few thousand years ago to before the dinosaur age, after scientists were able to verify the age of some lumps of clay. Playing round with lumps of clay--didn't we do that in kindergarten?
If you want to wish Jenolan a happy 340 millionth birthday, it's a pleasant day trip from Sydney. But we recommend tying it in with your odyssey of Australian Big Things: In the nearby town of Oberon you'll find the Big Trout. Old caves, oversized fish, what else can you want in a holiday? Though perhaps you should finish it off with a Big Banana.
