Sky Europe Expands Again

July 21, 2006 at 9:46 AM | by | Comments (0)

On Wednesday, Sky Europe announced new routes to and from Bucharest. Sky Europe, for those living under a rock, is the Slovak low-cost carrier partially responsible for making Bratislava an increasingly common stop on the Central European grand tour.

On January 12, 2007, Sky Europe will begin flying between Bucharest and Rome. A Budapest-Bucharest route will commence a few weeks later, on February 1.

The lead time here is pretty striking. February 1 is, after all, over six months away. Observers of European Union politics will note that both routes will begin shortly after Romania joins the European Union on January 1, 2007.

Sky Europe claims these flights as part of its "Go East" strategy, which already flies to Varna and Bourgas (both in Bulgaria). The Sky Europe network also includes Krakow, Warsaw, Slovak ski region Poprad-Tatras, and several Croatian cities, among other destinations.

Given the tourist cost index in Western Europe, the euro's long-term trouncing of the dollar, and the expanding buzz surrounding Eastern European destinations, Sky Europe is well situated to move Americans along to less expensive, less polished, and less touristed parts of Europe.
