Scout's Honor in Andersonville
Andersonville, a Chicago 'hood both hip and gay (imagine that!) is in great retail shape. The presence of a few well-stocked Scandinavian speciality markets in Andersonville allows locals access to imported cloudberry jam, which is a benefit without parallel. Good bookstores and homewares shops round out the 'hood.
The most appealing of the homewares lot is Scout, a furniture and décor store. The vibe at Scout is both modernist and folksy. At Scout, you're invited to contemplate a fully fleshed-out design sensibility that references the classic modernist lexicon without looking like every other shop of its type.
Owner Larry Vodak travels to pockets of the Midwest, New England, and elsewhere to locate his treasures. Vodak has a great eye for hidden treasures. A high laboratory table and the lamp selection both caught our attention.
The pricetags at Scout will delight those accustomed to NYC, LA, and SF modern furniture dens, but there are few steals here. Scout is where you come when you're serious about getting your apartment into tip-top shape.
