German Fans Beepin' Proud

Another first round victory for Germany yesterday (3-0 against Ecuador) and they're won the group and are through to the round of 16. Another victory meant another long night of horn-honking, whistling and shouting from top to bottom of Germany. Patriotism isn't something the Germans do easily, but this summer it seems to be allowed.

It's a needle-and-haystack job to find a shop selling German flags now, but it's easy to see them flapping from apartment balconies and whistling along the autobahns attached to car windows. Face paint's done a roaring trade too. For those who didn't get in quick enough, their VW or Mercedes horn is their only outlet for the current celebrations. Wait and see how far Germany gets into the knock-out rounds: it might be that functioning car horns become a rarity, too.
