Is Dulles The Worst Airport in the World?

June 20, 2006 at 10:12 AM | by markj | 2 Comments

Speaking of airports with issues...

Is Washington Dulles (IAD) the worst airport in the world? Probably not in the world, but worst major airport in the US? After what we experienced over the last couple of days at Dulles we would most definitely nominate Dulles for the worst airport in the United States. Why you ask?

First, we detest airports where you disembark only to find out you need to hop on a tram before you will see baggage or transportation. Second, the LAS Vegas tram is one thing, but at IAD they move people in some sort of rig that looks like a cross between a camper and a Jawa Sand Crawler.  Oh, and these "shuttles" arrive every ten minutes, so if you hit the tram port just right you can wait a full ten minutes.

Second, once you leave the tram you have to go up and down at least three escalators, walk through endless corridors only to arrive in what appeared to be a completely disorganized baggage claim area.

Finally, and we know this goes for every airport, IAD is under construction.

We know there are some terrible airports out there, and it looks like it is time for Jaunted to start a list. Do us a favor and tell us about your least favorite airports--photos are encouraged. We are sure there are worse airports out there than IAD, but for now, this experience puts Dulles atop our new dubious airport list.

Oh, and sure, you can take into account runway length, noise levels, pretty much whatever makes you hate the place. Send all photos and airport hells to tips-a t-jaunted.com.

    People Movers

Believe it or not, my grandfather helped design and build Dulles waaayyy back in the day and when they were first testing the "people movers", my dad and uncle (aged 7 and 5) were part of the testing group as to whether they would "work out". Maybe they didn't have anyone in that testing group except 7 and 5 year olds?
