Goleo's New Home

Friday saw the opening match of the World Cup, pitting host nation Germany against sacrificial virgin Costa Rica. If anyone is familiar with the short film Bambi vs. Godzilla, we were pretty sure it was going to be a similar spectacle. Luckily, it was exciting, at least for a half, and that was more than we hoped for, anyway. It certainly made the German fans happy at Tonic on Friday, where the German Tourist Board held and event to celebrate the tournament's kickoff. Let's make friends, indeed! They had us at the weisswurst.
We had surprises in store; one was that Tonic was totally full downstairs and turning away people before the match had started--at noon on a Friday! Don't people work in New York City? Two was that a colleague won a Goleo plush doll. Since Goleo's been practically excommunicated from the tournament after the manufacturer of Goleo merchandise declared bankruptcy, we took him as our own, and he will be accompanying us to all the games we see. He's Jaunted's mascot now.
Goleo also agrees that the Munich's Allianz Arena, where the opener was played, looks like a giant marshmallow. It's hard to appreciate architecture when it looks like it should be roasting on a stick.
