World Cup Ticket Madness, Continued

May 9, 2006 at 2:31 PM | by AVB | 0 Comments

We thought it was bad that people were going to have their names printed on official tickets to the World Cup, but it turns out that the organizers have something a little more sinister in mind. A little over three million of the remaining tickets have RIFD tags in them, encoded with personal data that organizers will be able to check against photo ID. If the ticket holder doesn't match up with the ID, FIFA may then bar the ticketholder entry to the stadium. Wicked.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is one of the last remaining places where tickets can be purchased on eBay. Britain outlawed scalped tickets for the event, and a German lawsuit to permit ticket scalping was upheld, although it remains unclear whether it applied to that single case or all tickets in the World Cup's host nation.

Many people who are buying the scalped tickets think the simple logistics of checking every last one entering the stadium is impossible, and that they will make it through security unscathed. Still, losing out on a $3,000 USD purchase remains a possibility. Wouldn't it be easier to save that money for body paint and watch from home?
