Getting a Leg Up in Munich
Munich and the rest of Germany may be overrun with visitors when the World Cup begins on the 9th of June, but at the moment, the city is just about ready for its close-up. Gary Lee of the Washington Post just visited Munich and Stuttgart for their Travel section, and he was pleasantly surprised to find places that locals recommended exist, and are better than many the old Munich tourist standards.
It's a spot-on point to make. Munich always struck us as a little too oompah-band-esque for our tastes; Berlin is as chic as Germany gets, and Munich just felt like the more expensive but less hip brother to the south. If you can find these cheaper places that are popular with locals, at least you won't be paying through the nose for your pork knuckles and steins of beer while you're in town.
Also cool is one of the events leading up to the Cup, the Night of Long Sports:
On July 2, the Long Night of Sports program will feature dozens of local sports clubs, including aquatic divers and horseback riders, in public sports demonstrations. Those who tire of watching will have the chance to participate in in-line skating, tai-bo, Nordic walking, gymnastics and other sports at various sites.
Sounds like more fun that the night of long knives, at least.
