Japan: Hands Off the Melons
The land of the $200 melon--we've seen them, and all the pretty origami-style wrapping and ribbon doesn't make a $5 melon worth more--is trying a different angle. The Japan National Tourist Organization's Affordable Japan campaign is making a sensible attempt to point out ways we can enjoy Japan without being forced to win our way home on a Japanese game show.
The Free Attractions page has the right temptations, like beer, sake and wine factories where the drinks are all meant to be free. If you're hungry, museums exhibiting curry, instant noodles, fishcakes and cheese also feature on the no-cost list. If you're feeling intellectually hungry, they recommend a handful of technology museums, or for the brave, the Meguro Parasitological Museum.
It's just a pity that the JNTO doesn't seem mention window shopping at used panty vending machines or reading graphic porn manga over the shoulders of businessmen as low-cost ways to enjoy Japan.
