Getting There:
From Boston or New York
JetBlue now flies direct to Nassau. The best thing about JetBlue's messed up frequent flier program is that you can redeem your free flights to any JetBlue destination, so Nassau is completely in play. From Nassau you need to get to North Eleuthera. You can do this one of two ways. Take a Bahama Air flight to North Eleuthera, or take the "local" on Southern Air, which stops at Governors Harbour and then flies on to North Eleuthera. We call it the "local" because it is cheaper, slower, and makes a stop. Furthermore, the plane is kind of old and battered, they ask you your weight before you board, and yes, the passenger next to us was drinking out of a paper bag. Just to ease your worried mind we took a look at Southern Air's safety record in the last five year's, and this was all we found.
Once on the ground in North Eleuthra you will be attacked by cab drivers and baggage handlers all looking to make a buck. Grab your own bag and make a bee line for the taxi vehicles. It will cost you $8 to get from the North Eleuthera airport to the water taxi dock.
The subsequent ten minute water taxi ride to Govt Dock on Harbour Island will cost you $5 a head. Once ashore, you can walk to The Landing or the Rock House, however, if you are staying elsewhere you will need to immediately rent a golf cart on Bay St (~$40) per day and drive yourself and your luggage to your hotel. Oh, and be prepared to drive on the left side of the road.
Bypassing the Island Hopper Flight
If you are squeamish about boarding these small planes in Nassau get ready to spend the night in Nassau or Paradise Island and board the Bo Hengy the following morning. The Bo Hengy is part of the Bahamas Fast Ferries and embarks for Harbour Island from Nassau daily at 8 AM, returning at 3:55 PM daily. A round trip ferry ticket will run you $110.00. The trip from Nassau to Harbour Island takes just under two hours.
From Miami or Fort Lauderdale
Continental now flies direct to North Eleuthera from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The hour long flight will cost you around $300, but if you combine it with other flight legs, you might be able to find a decent value.
Ok, there you have it, all the dirty details on how to get to Harbour Island.
