It's hard to argue with free stuff--the price is always right. To that end, Budget Travel has an "Ultimate Guide to Free Travel" in their April issue, and it's full of tips for the flinty, stingy, and just plain cheap among us.
Hidden among the classic ideas--driveaway car rentals, home exchanges, and house sitting--is one that we never considered before. World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms offers free food and lodging on organic farms for anyone willing to do the whole farming thing during the day, all for a sign-up fee of about $12. It's like a kibbutz, but cruchier, if such a thing were possible.
Farming vacations aren't limited to U.S. farms, either; there's outposts in Portugal, Switzerland, and even Uganda. Though we consider lifting a cocktail to our lips the only work we want to do on vacation, for those who want to work, it's a good deal. Maybe if there was an organic vineyard somewhere...
