Pittsburgh Pendulum

March 22, 2006 at 9:48 AM | by AVB | 1 Comment

There's a wealth of airfare options out there. Sometimes, when deals arrive in our inbox, we wish we had more disposable income to pay for them. Other times, we question not only the quality of the deal, but the wisdom of the featured destination. It's the old it's-cheap-for-a-reason trope. In our effort to be more, uh, Jaunty, we call this feature "Good Fare, Bad Fare"

Today's good fare is JetBlue's new service to Pittsburgh from JFK ($120 RT before taxes, starting June 30th). While this doesn't seem quite as exciting as a brand new cross-country fare to a warmer, less mustachioed clime, it's beneficial for frequent fliers and carbohydrate enthusiasts alike.

Fares into or through Pittsburgh have been artificially high pretty much since the earth cooled. While the arrival of Southwest to their airport was a nominal improvement, Southwest only flies out of Islip in New York, so the tri-state area didn't get much relief. This service should improve prices further--always a good thing.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has been overlooked for tourism. Philadelphia has been getting all the press, what with their expensive cheesesteaks and sixth borough status. Pittsburgh has a lot to offer, especially for anyone who likes unhealthy sandwiches. And who doesn't?

Pittsburgh has plenty of them, using all different parts of the pig, including hot Italian sausage and chipped ham. The most famous are those on offer from Primanti Brothers; their 'wiches come topped with French fries. Why bother having them on the side?

So, think of JetBlue's new Pittsburgh flights as the French fry topping to your airfare sandwich.
