There's always a twinge of guilt that comes with booking at a chain hotel. It's like rooting for General Motors, and it takes away that whiff of danger from the excitement of a hotel stay.

It's not only the chain hotels that we find banal--it's the bland websites supporting them, too. While we usualy leave hotel choices to our sister, when we get to pick, we like to use hotelbook.com. They carry listings for about 5,000 independent hotels worldwide, and it's a touch snazzier than the usual suspects.

Taking the site for a quick spin, they have the correct rundown of good hotels in Albania on offer, never an easy task. Seriously, check out the Rogner the next time you hit Tirana. The electricty is always working there, unlike in the rest of town.
