Hitchsters Offers Taxi Awkwardness to the Masses

December 8, 2006 at 11:50 AM | by | Comment (1)

We reported on the launch of airport ride-sharing  site Hitchsters.com last month, and are back to fill you in on some of the changes they've made. At the time, we weren't entirely thrilled with the prospect of stuffing ourselves into a cab for the long ride to the airport, but the concept is starting to seem more appealing...slightly more appealing. From our place in Manhattan to Newark airport, it's fifteen minutes in great traffic, and that's a tolerable amount of time for taxi awkwardness. But when is there great traffic? At 5 a.m., sometimes.

The biggest improvement to the Hitchsters site is the option of viewing the queue (or "hopper") of riders already signed up. Users previously had to wait for the site to shake its Magic 8-Ball and email a match. Lazy riders can check up on who's waiting for a share and simply pass on the option if no one's available. Proactive travelers can still enter their information and get mates to find them. The service is currently operating for New York City only.

It's not a bad option if you're looking for something that fits between the AirTrain and a private taxi. It'll run you about as much as the pizza-n-beer, in which you convince that one friend of yours who has a car to take you to the airport in exchange for a pie and six pack.

Worldwide taxi sharing?

This looks great. A really nice idea and a nice take on the ride sharing concept. I just wonder if this idea is restricted to US airports. Does anyone know of a similar service outside the US?
