Can't Buy Me Love

Where: Korea
December 27, 2006 at 10:15 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

While we know that in China, hugging and kissing in public is a very rare commodity, just a short hop east in South Korea, the government is worried about another kind of sexual activity. They think that Korean men are in danger of visiting too many brothels as a result of heavy drinking during the New Year's season. In the Korea Times, a government official described the problem in this way:

Korean corporate culture that includes heavy drinking is also what makes buying sex acceptable as a way for male-bonding, which is proving to be a hard-to-break ritual.
And so they've introduced a workplace-based incentive system, with free movie tickets available to companies who manage to get a sufficient number of their employees to make the pledge not to buy sex after an office celebration. The firm that enlists the most pledgers will win $1365.

Yet South Korean men, it seems, just don't see themselves as big sex gods and can't believe the government's making such a fuss. We normally wouldn't recommend letting the government or your boss dictate your New Year's Eve plans, but in this case, we'll endorse it. Anything when a few won are involved.
