Surfing: Off the Grid

If you're into surfing--and how could you not be?--then you need to get down to Troncones, on southern Mexico's Pacific coast. That's the "secret" Julia Chaplin reveals about the beach bum paradise in a recent New York Times piece. We're always a little dubious about "secret" towns and "undiscovered" paradises, but even we have to admit Troncones sounds pretty sweet.
One of the best reasons to check it out, a local surfer says, is the lack of attitude. The laid-back vibe is likely preserved by the fairly complicated route to Troncones that keeps out the riff-raff. Not that you have to be an expert to enjoy the waves--they're "on the mellower side." Julia didn't mention Troncones Point Surf Club in the article, but it looks like the kind of place we'd want to kick back. If that doesn't work for you, check out the Inn at Manzanillo Bay.
