Sydney Farewells '06 With 21,000 Bangs

The world's most famous coat hanger, Sydney's Harbour Bridge, is celebrating its 75th anniversary come New Year's Eve, with the big December 31 celebrations titled A Diamond Night in Emerald City. Diamond for the 75 years, and "Emerald City" because locals think their city is so special that it rivals the magic of the Emerald City of the classic tale "The Wizard of Oz." Got all that? Well, it's not so important to understand the whole marketing concept as to get yourself down to Sydney Harbour, along with an expected million others, and enjoy welcoming in 2007.

As always, there'll be fireworks galore, with the early show at 9 p.m. and the real thing at midnight. Some 21,000 fireworks will be exploded during each show, and as they always say, some of these will be of the never-seen-before-in-Australia variety. The promoters will even attempt to recreate a bridge, using a thousand lights to form a hundred-meter wide "light bridge." The big question is, of course, once the obligatory "Goodbye 2006" beers have been drunk, will anyone remember all of this grandeur?
