Summer's Swimming Holes

August 19, 2005 at 9:43 AM | by sedona | 0 Comments

Today's NY Times has a great roundup of some of the better swimming holes across the country. Defined as "a depression in a natural body of water, usually a river, brook or stream, that is at least neck deep, enough to submerge a swimmer", swimming holes, especially finding an undiscovered one, are the topic of swimmingholes.info --and the Times' article's subject is the site's 'northeast correspondent' (sweet job, buddy) Apparently, Vermont's got the mother lode. And they are often found accidently, by seeing kids walking on the side of the road with towels when there's no pool in sight. Read on for a list of the article's suggested best nationwide swimming holes...and then jump away!

BRIDAL VEIL FALLS
Where: Tallulah Falls, Ga.
Why: "The hike down is very strenuous, but the reward is magnificent. The wide waterfall provides a thrilling ride down a natural slide."

BASH BISH FALLS
Where: South Egremont, Mass.
Why: "Nestled in the rugged terrain of extreme southwestern Massachusetts, Bash Bish Falls is perpetually scenic; it even sounds beautiful."

SLIDE ROCK
Where: Sedona, Ariz.
Why: "The stunning landscape of the Southwest and the cool, clear water of Oak Creek combine to make this a true oasis in the desert."

CIRCLE CURRENT
Where: Bristol, Vt.
Why: "The endless number of cascades, small pools, water slides and Jacuzzis and rock formations make it a perfect place to restore, rejuvenate, sunbathe or swim. It's said that you never set foot in the same river twice. That is especially true here."
