Travelers: Just Tourists with NPR Totebags?

Travel writer John Flinn takes on that classic bugaboo: who's a clever traveler and who's a stupid, ugly tourist? (This question has been in the air for some time -- at least one major travel-book publisher banished "tourists" from their pages years ago, leaving only "travelers" in their place.) Flinn concludes that this false distinction comes down to the democratizing effects of travels. If anyone can be a tourist, then so-called sophisticates need a word to set themselves apart.
