John Elway Will Be Slinging Steaks Soon Enough at Denver Airport

For football fans—and those who enjoy a juicy steak—one of the best airport restaurants is now on the drawing board. Former NFL great John Elway—quarterback of the Denver Broncos—has a couple steakhouses in the greater Denver area. Apparently the restaurants—known as Elway’s—are pretty popular and very tasty, so the plan is now to expand Elway's to the airport.

There’s still a lot of paperwork to be completed and plans to be finalized, but it sounds like Denver International Airport is getting ready for plenty of steak and excited for the opening late next year. The plan is to build the restaurant in and around the existing United Airlines gates within Concourse B.

Of course we were thinking about how the steakhouse is going to handle the lack of metal knives after security, but they’re not too concerned. One member of the restaurant group commented on the tenderness of a steak from Elway’s remarking that cutting one of their steaks doesn’t require a knife. However, if you need one, they do have plans to source some pretty descent plastic knives.

Lace Up Your Skates for Southwest Airlines' Downtown Denver Ice Rink

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Southwest Airlines, and we’re not just talking about their plans to giveaway free holiday photos and Santa snapshots. Now the holiday spirit is moving to the Mile High City, as the airline and the city is bringing back the Rink at Skyline Park for the 2011 season.

Denver already has its own Southwest Porch—complete with pizzas and drinks—but now the rink is back to help you burn off some of those mozzarella induced calories. The skating is open to one and all, as long as you can get yourself over to 16th and Arapahoe streets.

Modern Art Travel: Six Miles of Fabric, a Rocky Mountain River and Christo

Mark your calendars for a trip to Colorado in 2014 as plans for the next large, public art project by Christo finally moves forward.

This is a huge deal, not just for fans of Christo and modern art in general, but for Denver, Coloradans, tourists to the state and anyone who enjoys experiencing the great outdoors. Christo, in case you've forgotten the massive "Gates" installation in Central Park, is an artist who typically wraps or covers areas or landmarks in fabric. A personal favorite is his wrapped Reichstag. The project in CO, however—Over the River—would stretch some 6 miles of translucent silver fabric over the Arkansas River.

Yesterday "Over the River" received the OK from federal officials and now the plan is off to state and local authorities before work may begin. Naturally we're already imagining rafting down the river and hiking along it, Christo's creation above our heads.

A Couple Options for Scoring Sold-Out Tickets to The Great American Beer Festival

The granddaddy of all beer festivals is taking place later this month in Denver. It's the Great American Beer Festival and it runs from September 29 and October 1. There’s not just a few hundred beers and breweries here either, as this sucker will have more than 450 brewers in attendance with over 2,000 beers. There are four sessions spread across the three days of the year’s festival, and whichever one you pick is going to be a winner.

Hold on a sec. It's not just about guzzling either; this festival goes way above and beyond the traditional beer festival by including an on-site beer enthusiast bookstore, discussions from the American Homebrewers Association, and a farm-to-table pavilion. Expect plenty of samples from CAUTION: Brewing Company, Del Norte Brewing Company, and Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company, along with plenty of options from outside Colorado.

Virgin Atlantic has managed to align itself with anything sleek, sexy, and, well, just plain awesome on the travel front, with this cool cache now extending to international cultural happenings. Film festivals—what with their covetable goodie bags, after parties, and celebrity pull—certainly fall into the "Ever-So-Hip" category, which is likely why VA has aligned itself with the forthcoming Telluride Film Festival, set to take place from September 2-5, 2011.

VA will serve as Telluride's partner airline, hosting a splashy tribute event during the festival run and a contest that gives film aficionados a shot at attending TFF come fall.

Rape at Denver International Means Think Twice About Sleeping in Airports

Don't cry "rape" when you pass through one of the TSA's full-body scanners, because actual airport rape does happen, and it's not something to be taken lightly. In the early morning hours yesterday, a 26-yr-old man was arrested at Denver International Airport after sexually assaulting a 22-yr-old woman who was staying in the airport through the night after missing her connection.

The two allegedly began chatting at a bistro within the airport, but when the girl excused herself, the man followed then assaulted her. It was only when two of the airport employees outside saw the assault through the windows that 911 was called and the man arrested by airport security.

This crime should immediately cause a siren to go off in the heads of solo travelers who find themselves hanging out in airports, especially after hours. Being past TSA security on the "airside" end of an airport doesn't automatically guarantee safety, and in such a place of transience, it's best to reflect on the "don't talk to strangers" lesson you learned in kindergarten.

Get A First Person Look at Last Week's Delta Emergency Landing

Some Delta passengers had something to be thankful for this holiday season as 2010 ended, as their flight had to make an emergency landing in Colorado Springs last Thursday. Obviously any landing that isn’t on the scheduled runway at the scheduled time is an emergency one, but this detour was pretty calm and orderly.

Pilots noticed a light indicating that one of their engines was probably not working like it was supposed to, so they made the decision to land in Colorado instead of Arizona. However, once safely on the ground the overheated brakes created a fire danger, so the call was made for all passengers to Steven Slater their way out of the plane and onto the runway.

Growing up, we were satisfied with grabbing our candy canes and other holiday goodies from a place like CVS or Walgreens, but now that our palettes are a little more refined we’re eager to sink our teeth into more gourmet candies. So if you’re traveling through Denver this Christmas season you might want to take a detour to Hammond’s Candies where they’ve been cranking out the sweet and sticky goodies since 1920.

Even though they’re plenty busy adding stripes to candy canes this time of the year, they’ll be happy to show you around their factory. Tours are totally free and are offered every 30 minutes during the week, as well as on Saturday. Things close down on Sunday, as even candy makers don’t love their jobs that much. No reservations are required, so you can just pretty much show up and see how all the confections take their shape.

The Quickest Way to Go from the Airport to Jail Is...

The quickest way to go from the airport to jail is...by claiming that you put a bomb on a plane. Heck, any mention of a bomb onboard a plane can get you pulled to the airport jail faster than you can say "body cavity search," so then why did a Utah traveler decide that claiming there was a bomb in his checked luggage was the easiest way to stop the plane he was too late to catch? Mystifying.

The man, who was late to the gate to board his plane at Denver International Airport for a short Skywest flight to Salt Lake City, "grew angry and made the comment about a bomb in his luggage already on the plane." This is according to Denver Post, who explain what delightful formal charges and jail time now await this business traveler:

Spotted! Southwest's Free Pedicabs Are Going Strong In Denver

We’d written about the Southwest Airlines-sponsored pedicabs of Denver when they launched in July, of course, but we were still tickled when we actually found one of them during our trip to the Mile High City last week.

We found our cheery-looking fellow decked out in a Southwest t-shirt and his rickshaw dolled up in the colors outside the Hyatt Regency hotel, standing on the corner of the street calling out: “Free rides! Free downtown rides!”

Denver Airport May Not Have The Best Food, But It Sure Is Pretty

Why, isn’t this the prettiest little airport you ever did see? We’ve heard lots of good things about Denver International Airport being up there in the stylish airport ranks, but we’d assumed its fashionista status was confined to its outside appearance of the snowy peaks on top of the building.

Not so! There was, as we found out last week, art everywhere, from the peak-shaped tiles on the floor to the train-off-the-rails-type installation at the shuttle station.

Southwest Airlines Opens a Porch with Pizza and Beer Today in Denver

The Southwest Porch in NYC's Bryant Park

Now that it's been well over a year since Southwest celebrated the launch of their first LaGuardia routes with a successful "porch" in New York City's Bryant Park, they're expanding with another one in Denver. The just-opened Southwest Porch at Skyline Park may not have the fancy olive appetizers and DIY S'mores of the NYC one, but it does have great thin-crust pizza and a (mostly) full bar.

The Porch, at the intersection of 16th and Arapahoe streets in the base of the Daniels and Fisher Tower will be open year-round, beginning today. The goal of the Porch is to show Southwest's dedication to Denver, but also to just give locals a cool place to hang out, says Southwest:

Linda Rutherford, Southwest's vice president of communication, said the venue will showcase the carrier's 'legendary customer service' and 'warm hospitality.' From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the Porch will serve pizza by David Bravdica, whose street cart Brava! Pizzeria Della Strada has been at the Skyline site. Lannie Garrett's Clocktower Cabaret will pour the drinks.

Free stuff alert! Southwest will give away a pair of round-trip tickets to Porch customers at lunch and during happy hour today, and will double frequent-flier miles for travel to and from Denver between Sept. 23 and Dec. 15 on the airline.
