Ahilya Fort

Ahilya Fort, a former palace, is in Madhya Pradesh, in the center of India and not exactly on most tourist itineraries. But if it's the middle of nowhere, it's quite a nowhere: the last maharajah's son still owns the palace, so staying in one of 14 rooms is (a bit) more like staying at a friend's house rather than staying at a big pile now owned and run by a luxury hotel chain. Room start around $200 a night -- not cheap, but still about half what the Taj or the Oberai would likely try to charge. And their princes all left the building long ago.
