Five New Places to Eat and Drink (Respectably!) at Miami International Airport

July 7, 2011 at 12:25 PM | by | Comments (0)

Veteran Miami International Airport flyers already know that pit stops at La Caretta and Cafe Versailles are worth skipping an airline meal for. Or, if you prefer crappy more standard airport fare, you can head to the slew of beer-themed bars and outposts of Shula's Bar and Grill and Bongo's—the Cuban cafe whose slogan is "Where The Rhythm's Gonna Get You."

But, thanks to MIA's $2.94 billion North Terminal overhaul, there are some surprising new places to eat and drink while transiting through the gateway to South America. Here are five of the latest additions to Concourse D, home of American Airlines.

(Even if we'll still be buying our Cubanos at La Caretta, and our morning coffees at Versailles. Old habits and all that.)

You've Never Heard of Them, but ArkeFly Jets from Amsterdam to Florida

July 6, 2011 at 1:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Amstel Light just not cutting it anymore? If you need a dose of the stronger brew, or another of Amsterdam's unique offerings, there's now a new way to get to the Netherlands from Florida. On June 24, Dutch airline ArkeFly launched a non-stop service between Amsterdam and Orlando. SoFla gets a piece of the action, too, with the flight continuing on to Miami International before flying non-stop back to Amsterdam.

The new routes, which will operate Mondays and Fridays, make ArkeFly the only Dutch airline to offer non-stop service to Orlando and Miami.

How to Ride the Miami Airport Flyer Bus from MIA to the Beach

July 5, 2011 at 5:39 PM | by | Comment (1)

When you arrive at Miami International Airport, you want the full experience: you want to jump in your Ferrari convertible, throw on your Aviators and high-tail it to South Beach.

Not a bad way to do it, but have you seen how people in Miami drive? It's not for the faint of heart. Until recently, though, the only way to get from MIA to your hotel at the beach was car, cab, or car. (Hotel shuttles, maybe).

Then came December and the introduction of the Miami Airport Flyer, or Route 150 as it is also known.

What You Need to Know as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Celebrates One Year

June 20, 2011 at 5:27 PM | by | Comments (0)

Has it already been a year then? Universal Studios' The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park just celebrated its first anniversary, after opening last June to much fan fare and continuting right through the winter and spring with crazy crowds. We were there on opening day, and although we're adults who travel around the world all year, being in the midst of that excitement still counts as one of the coolest things we did in 2010. The Wizarding World absolutely has the Jaunted seal of approval.

So, if you're heading down this summer for an icey mug of Butterbeer, a ride on the Chinese Fireball Dragon and maybe even a chocolate frog, there's a few things you need to know one year in:

Where the Celebs Went to Do Some Father's Day Family Bonding

June 20, 2011 at 3:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

Like most fathers, celeb dads spend Father's Day with their kids. But instead of getting homemade ties and grilling in the backyard, they relax by lounging on luxury yachts and touring the city of lights.

Yesterday, Tom Cruise hit the high seas in Miami with Katie Holmes and their daughter Suri aboard the luxury yacht Marquis. Tom was spotted holding Suri in his lap on the boat's deck as they arrived back to the Florida coast after an afternoon relaxing on the ocean.

And the Next Movie Universal Studios is Turning into an Attraction is...

May 19, 2011 at 11:22 AM | by | Comments (0)

It was almost this time last year that Universal Studios Orlando's Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened, and we're not ashamed to say our time at the park created some of our most memorable and fun moments from 2010.

Instead of resting on their laurels, Universal just announced more improvements and new things coming to their Orlando park, although these won't be ready until next year. The biggest deal is that the movie Despicable Me will become a 3D "experience" ride to replace the Jimmy Neutron one already in place. Here's the lowdown on that:

This Free Tattoo Shuttle Will Take You to Your Next Bad Decision

May 10, 2011 at 3:51 PM | by | Comments (0)

Fort Lauderdale has worked hard to wipe away its Spring Break destination reputation by banning drinking on the beaches and requiring folks to be 21 or older to check into a hotel, but the town hasn't given up the party completely.

The main drag, A1A, is still populated with bars and restaurants, almost all with outdoor patios, and on a recent Saturday night last month, we spotted folks salsa-ing on the sidewalks and making out along the beach wall. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and there was nary a wet t-shirt contest in sight.

Then we spotted this--a free tattoo shuttle to the Tattoo Blues shop. Ok, this might seem like nirvana when you've been downing tequila shots all day and you've been struck with the inspiration to get Justin Bieber tattooed on your derriere but will you think the free shuttle was such a good idea the next morning? Probably not.

All we have to say is ride with care. After all, friends don't let friends ride the free tattoo shuttle unless they've been thinking about getting that tattoo for at least a month.

All-Stars from 'Amazing Race' Season 18 Take Their Million to Party in Miami

May 10, 2011 at 9:02 AM | by | Comments (0)

After a wrapping up the all-star 18th season of the Amazing Race with a nail-biter of a finale that included everything from getting waxed all over in Brazil to bob-diving through mermaids and underwater musicians in the Florida Keys, the racers took time out to party at the Loews South Beach in Miami.

The top finishers were in attendance, including first-place sisters Jen and Kisha Hoffman, second-place Globetrotters and hilarious pals Flight Time and Big Easy, third-place father-daughter team Gary and Mallory Ervin, and four-place BFFs Zev Glassenberg and Justin Kanew. For once, we can see them all cleaned up and in real clothes.

The Sunshine State Could Be the Next Spot to Get Its Very Own Travel Boycott

May 9, 2011 at 2:52 PM | by | Comment (1)

It’s been some time since Arizona decided that they were going to change some of their rules and regulations dealing with immigration, and that led many travelers to pledge that they would skip over the state until things changed. We don’t have any cold hard facts or figures regarding a decline in Grand Canyon tourism or other Arizona hotspots, but negative attention usually isn’t a good thing.

Florida seems to be the next state looking to cause a little trouble, and as a result, it might just be the next state that some travelers will be boycotting. The state legislature recently passed a new bill that would—in their words—require “a reasonable effort” to figure out the immigration status of all those that are lucky enough to meet up with members of law enforcement. We’re not experts on stuff like this, but we do know that things are a little less intense than the policies and procedures over in Arizona.

MLB Season Just Began, but the Marlins' New Stadium Has Us Looking Forward to 2012

April 13, 2011 at 10:50 AM | by | Comments (0)

This year’s Major League Baseball season is already well underway, and we’re glad to see the boys of summer back on the field—even if it’s still only spring. Although we enjoy baseball, what we really enjoy is checking out new stadiums. Unfortunately this year is coming up a little bit dry, as there are no new stadiums debuting in the big leagues. We can deal with the lack of new stadium smell, as it only makes us look forward to 2012 even more.

The Florida Marlins are on schedule to finally escape their home they share with the Miami Dolphins—yes, unfortunately for all of their existence they’ve been stuck playing in a stadium designed for football. Next year the team will be renamed the Miami Marlins as they move into a brand new, baseball-only home on the former location of the Orange Bowl in the Little Havana section of the city.

The Boston Red Sox Will Soon Be Scoring Runs at 'JetBlue Stadium'

April 6, 2011 at 9:18 AM | by | Comment (1)

With their new home within T5 at JFK there’s little doubt that JetBlue really loves New York. They’re proud to be the city’s hometown airline, and they even revamped the iconic "I <3 NY" logo into something with a little JetBlue flare. Well their relationship with the Big Apple might be on the rocks, as not only is JetBlue the official airline of the Boston Red Sox for the next eight years—but now they’re going to sponsor a stadium.

Baseball purists need not worry, as Fenway Park isn’t getting a JetBlue makeover; however, the team’s spring training home in Florida will now be known as JetBlue Park. The Sox are busy finishing a new Sunshine State stadium in time for spring training of 2012, and when the turnstiles begin to turn and the box offices open up, it will be all JetBlue all the time.
