Jaunted's Kiddie Travelers Series: What Grub Can They Eat?
While we lick our chops just thinking about Singapore Airlines' poached lobster tail stuffed with crab meat entree, it's not exactly the type of food that little gourmands appreciate. They want comfort food classics—mac and cheese, chicken fingers.
Some airlines accommodate children's palates with special menus just for them. Others let the kids fend for themselves among the grown-up culinary offerings, forcing mom and dad to buy something, anything, from the airport's stale Starbucks case to keep Junior quiet and happy on the flight.
· American: No special menu, but kids may like the Quaker oatmeal and Breyers YoCrunch Strawberry Yogurt among the morning offerings.
· Continental: Children's menu is available on select flights.
· Delta: No special menu, but kids will like the almond butter and banana sandwich.
· JetBlue: No special menu, but children will devour healthier trans-fat-free snacks such as Stauffer's Animal Crackers, Terra Blues potato chips, Immaculate Baking Company's Chocobilly Chocolate Chip Cookies and Chifles Plantain Chips.
· Southwest: Southwest doesn't serve meals, but parents can request pretzels for the kids rather than peanuts. And attendants will put lids on cups for those clumsy little fingers.
· United: The children's menu features soft, easy-to-chew foods and may include finger foods.
· US Airways: None, though tots will like nibbling on the bagel, cheese and fruit platter.
· Virgin America: No special menu, but popular kiddie options are yogurt parfaits, the whole almonds and the fresh veggies with pita chips. Another perk is the touch-screen seatback ordering system, which allows parents to get food when the finicky eaters are hungry, rather than when the cart rolls by.
